Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart. ~Erma Bombeck
My son is at the onset of puberty, so everything seems to have thorns on…any request,
suggestion or discussion from our side must have thorns on, because goodness knows, it
inevitably ends up being a heated discussion.
That boy of ours, such a good-hearted boy and potential by the bucket load. I see it in him,
but because he struggles in school and has to learn 3 times harder than the average kid,
getting involved with his own tomorrow takes lots of effort and hard work….generally not
something commonly found in teenagers. So what is the answer? How do you make
someone care about their own life? How do you get them to buy into the future?
This past week I find myself thinking that this must be exactly what God goes through with
us. He sees the bigger picture. The whole picture. And He has even told us what is to come. He sees the potential and He knows that with a little bit of effort and sacrifice we could be well on our way to being actively involved in His plan. A plan filled with so much promise for you and me.
Sometimes I imagine him sitting shaking his head, saying to the angels, now look at her, if
only she would look at the bigger picture and get involved…what a waste of gifts and
promises. Why doesn’t she know her purpose, when everything she needs to serve the
cause has been given to her? I can imagine it would be a great source of frustration for our
Father.
I know…, it’s hard. We have so many things to choose and make decisions about, every
single day. It’s hard to know which decisions matter and which don’t. But in order for the plan to work, we need to look and live outside of ourselves and we need to buy into what is happening and what is going to happen. And getting involved IS His commandment to us, so only living for yourself and not using any of the talents He bestowed upon you is
“counter-productive”.
So what to do?
Choose everyday to live outside of yourself and connect with people around you. Choose to spread His light around. Do that and no matter even if people let you down, reject you or
move away from the light, don’t ever stop choosing that. And I think if you start with that,
He will show you where to grow from there.
I can say with certainty that THAT is part of his plan. He is calling your name today…
The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.
Psalm 145:8 (NIV)
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the
eternal covenant brought back
from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,
equip you with
everything good for doing his will,
and may he work in us what is pleasing to
him, through Jesus Christ,
to whom be glory forever and ever.
Amen.
