1.Hi Johan, Welcome to NasieInspirasie!
Please tell us a bit about yourself and how you discovered your passion for art?
Art has always been in my family. My mother is an Art and design teacher, and she has always encouraged me to keep experimenting with different materials and mediums while at school. My Grandparents were also art collectors and I was exposed to famous South African artists works from a young age.
2. What Mediums do you enjoy using most?
My medium of choice is charcoal. I love sketching and one will notice it is the foundation of most of my works. I combine the charcoal with acrylics, ink and pastels.
3. Where can we see/find more of your work?
I don't exhibit currently and sell my work online mostly. I have an online shop at http://saatchiart.com/ My work can also be viewed on www.facebook.com/pages/Art-Wall/624977197558620?ref=hl.
4. NasieInspirasie is all about Inspiring people to give what they've got, no matter how small the contribution, it can make a big difference. ("a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.")...
What or Who inspires you?
I would say my main inspiration is nature. I live on a farm and enjoy the outdoors.
Artists who inspire me are, William Kentridge, Lionel Smith, Peter Pharoah and Ryan Hewett.
5. Please share a story behind one of your artworks
I have only been actively painting the past 4 years, so it's all still a learning curve for me. Experimenting with different mediums, materials and subject matter. While working on a specific piece, I had a breakthrough and it is where I discovered which combinations of materials worked for me and which style I was comfortable with. This piece is close to my heart and basically where it all started.
Artist, Johan De Waal
